Happy Labor Day

I hope this blog update finds you and your family enjoying your Labor Day weekend. It felt so good to get some extra sleep this morning. Now it is time to get back to work. I will be spending today working in my garden picking my carrots and getting the soil tilled. It's work, but I truly enjoy gardening.

I would like to give a huge thank you to HASA. They gave each of us teachers the most beautiful mums. I planted mine in a pot on my deck. It was just what my deck needed, considering all of my other flowers fizzled out on me with the high temperatures we were having. Thank you again HASA!!!

This week is a short week, so here is what you can expect:

Reading:  The story we will be reading is called "Opt". It is a short, but fun story. It is about a visit to a land of optical illusions. While reading the story with your child, give the illusions a try. Story Questions will be coming home on Tuesday. With it being a short week, question #6 will be extra credit. The children are getting the hang of answering them in question-answer form.  Thank you for your help at home in reinforcing this.

Language:  This week we will begin working on identifying the subject of a sentence. We will also be wrapping up our paragraph writing about Miss Nelson Is Missing.

Spelling:  The packets for "Opt" were ripped out on Friday. The children are given time in class to work on these, but should be working on them at home too. The packets will be due on Friday. Words 3X each are due on Thursday. Please remind your child to put the proper heading at the top and to skip lines between groups of words.

The heading should look like this:

Chris Nemeth #25                                                             Sept. 6, 2010
Spelling                                                                             Opt

Math:  On Friday we wrapped up Chapter 1. We will be reviewing on Tuesday, and have a test on Wednesday. The class will be diving right into Chapter 2. This chapter will be reviewing place value, writing a number in standard form and expanded form, and introducing place value to the hundred thousands place. Please dig out those addition flash cards. I am still seeing many students counting on fingers. These facts need to be memorized.

Owl Prowl: I talked about the Owl Prowl at Back to School Night. Just a reminder that it will be on Tuesday, October 19th. I will be sending the letter home with more information in the next week or two. Mark your calendars. The evening will be a hoot!!!!!
