Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year to all of you! It was so nice seeing many of you this past week when my students performed their commercials based on his/her book reports. Everyone did an amazing job!

January is a very busy month. Part of it is getting prepared for our open house at the end of the month for Catholic Schools Week.

Reading:  This week we will be reading a story called "A Very Cool Place to Visit". It is about an ice hotel in Sweden. The picture above is the entrance to it. This week I will be showing the students a virtual tour of the Ice Hotel in Quebec. Along with the story question this week, there are two choices for question #6, the activity.

The first choice is to create a structure out of sugar cubes. It does not have to be a hotel nor does it have to be a freestanding structure. I only have one rule -be creative. Over the years, I have found that royal icing works the best to hold the sugar cubes together. I sent a recipe home, but if it did not make it that far, here is a recipe I found on the Internet:
Ingredients
  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 egg whites, beaten

Directions
In a bowl, sift together confectioners' sugar and cream of tartar. Using electric mixer, beat in 2 beaten egg whites for about 5 minutes or until mixture is thick enough to hold its shape.

I also have found that regular canned frosting from the grocery store works fine, too. This is a good project to use up any leftover candy from Christmas.

The second choice will be listed on the story question paper. It is to make a poster. If your child chooses to do the poster, it will need to be equal to the amount of time spent on the sugar cube structure.

Either project will be due by January 27th to be displayed for the open house.

Language: Last week I passed out the directions for our January book report. This month's book needs to be a biography. The children were given a form to be filled out after reading his/her book. Along with the book report, each child is to create a puppet about the person he/she read about. At the end of the month every child will perform a puppet show.

Math:  On Monday, we will finish up our test on money. We will next move on to telling time and understanding elapsed time. Don't forget to practice addition and subtraction facts.

Science:  There will be a Science test on Tuesday. I am offering an extra credit opportunity to both third grade classes.  With all the snow we received over the weekend, it is a great time to build a snowman. If your child would like to build a snowman at home, all you need to do is take a picture of the snowman and your child and bring it in to me. Your child can receive 10 extra credit points for Science. I will accept pictures until Friday, January 28th. Happy building!!!!

Have a great week and stay warm!
